Floating Boathouse (aka FloBo)

Last year, a client came to us requesting a floating houseboat (FloBo) redesign and remodel project. She had recently purchased the funky Mississippi Queen-style, 3-level FloBo that was parked in a southland harbor. The FloBo is about 2400 square feet of living space, with three floors of about 800sf each.

She wanted a design team who understood green design and simple living – someone who appreciated the benefits and challenges of a floating project and possessed a strong sense of spatial flow.

Here’s a summary of the design requirements:

  • A major transformation of the interior and exterior
  • Desired theme: exotic Southeast Asian haven
  • Keep the design and construction process as green as possible
  • Make it nice, do it right, but “…don’t shoot the wad”

The client wanted us to take a “hands-on approach” to the entire project, asking us to assist with the structural design, floorplan, interior design, contractor selection, and overseeing construction.

The schematic design process has been completed. The client loves what we’ve created together. Construction documents are finished, a suitable contractor has been selected, and work on the FloBo is currently under way.

Stay tuned for project completion photos and blog later this year.
