Answers to 11 of our most frequently asked questions.
We get it. How a stressful world of useless noise can be transformed into a better life with more beauty, more freedom, and more genuine connections.
We live it. How life is best when it’s filled with loved ones (4-legged ones, too!) who experience this amazing world together with everything they need, and nothing they don’t.
We build it. HofArc has designed more than 60 Airstreams. As a result of this experience we’ve learned a lot about how to do it right. Airstream renovations are complicated projects, with water, heating, electrical, mechanical and high tech systems. It is truly a complete home in a compact package.
As a licensed Architecture firm we offer clients several unique advantages. Naturally, we handle Airstream renovation projects much like an Architect and Contractor would handle a brick ‘n’ mortar home design and build.
Our first job is to help clients clearly define their goals and requirements. Since no renovator can predict every unknown component of these vintage trailers, or your expectations, it takes our expertise to nail it all down.
We’ll adjust your wants vs. needs until you’re comfortable with the budget range, then we’ll start with a Phase 1 Design Estimate and begin creating your Airstream. The Phase 1 design process takes 2-4 weeks.
In this first design phase we will create a floor plan, spec sheet, and full set of construction documents so that you see exactly what we are about to build. At the completion of Phase 1 we will provide you with a Phase 2 Renovation Estimate. If this budget meets with your approval we begin the renovation.
We’ve found this process to be time and money well spent. Our goal is to deliver you an Airstream that you can enjoy for years to come.
1. IN THE BEGINNING
Q: How did you get started doing Airstream renovations?
A: We (HofArc’s owners, Matthew and Wally Hofmann) each lived in an Airstream for more than a year. When Matthew launched his own Architectural firm in 2009, to help reduce his living expenses, he built an Airstream to live in. Then his father, Wally, who was a small town newspaperman for 20 years, told his story in a blog. Several print media, such as the LA Times, and Sunset Magazine, and online blogs picked up the story, and before we knew it people were contacting us to design and build an Airstream for them, too. Turns out others are also in search of a simpler lifestyle and enjoying the benefits.
2. AIRSTREAM’S POPULARITY
Q: Why are Airstreams more popular than other trailers?
A: First, these trailers look amazing. The brilliant silver skins are easy on the eyes. Second, they’ve held up much better over time than square-shaped trailers. Third, improved gas mileage for the car towing it. The iconic round shape provides a more aerodynamic pull and a much smoother tow. The construction of the Airstream naturally repels water because the aluminum skins overlap and never rust. Other trailer’s structures are made from wood – which eventually warps, leaks and rots. Finally, Airstreams have a better resale value than other trailers. They were the Rolls Royce of trailers in their day, and they’re an even hotter property today.
3. THE LEARNING PROCESS
Q: How did you learn how to renovate Airstreams?
A: We learn by doing. Our best teacher has been experience. As a trained and licensed Architect, Matthew knows how to build things right. As a father and son team, we’ve been building stuff together for more than 25 years. During this time we’ve refined the creative building process while embracing challenges and opportunities for discovery and growth. Today, our dozen or so craftsmen have more than 100 years of combined building experience. Their experience is essential in building Airstreams right. We’ve all learned from others, too. Our vendors and product manufacturers are an excellent resource. Every day we’re collaborating with each other on the best building practices.
4. THE HOFARC DIFFERENCE
Q: Why do your designs look so much better than the others?
A: We’re the only licensed Architecture firm we know of that focuses solely on vintage Airstreams. Of course, anyone can build something, but it takes years of training and talent to properly understand design, harmony, balance and scale. These are all valuable assets in the designing process, especially when designing in very tight spaces. Since the 1990s, we’ve been passionate about blending the classic nature of American design with contemporary styling. For example, in 1999 we designed a 5,000 sq. ft. home in the High Sierra that combined Arts & Crafts stylig with a Mountain Lodge aesthetic. We have a strong respect for the past, but we’re constantly looking for ways to blend modernity. This passion, respect and experience makes HofArc a good match for creating custom-built Airstreams.
5. ACQUISITIONS
Q: Do I need to have an Airstream before I come to you?
A: While some people have an Airstream when they contact us, we help many of our clients find an Airstream to buy. The price for an “as-is” Airstream is between $5,000 and $12,000. The first step is to help you determine the size and vintage that’s right for you. Then, we check with our network of Airstream Pickers from across the country to find the right Airstream at the right price. We usually are able to located one for clients in a couple weeks.
6. DEFINING GOALS
Q: After I have purchased an Airstream, what’s next?
A: The first step is the conceptual design phase when we learn your basic goals and requirements, such as: How do you plan to use your Airstream? Is it a travel trailer or a guesthouse? How many people plan to use it? What are your priorities for space? How many sleeping spaces?
7. BUDGETING
Q: How do we determine the project budget?
A: The cost of an Airstream renovation is determined in the design phase which includes preparing a floor plan, specification sheet, and a full set of construction documents. In this phase we formulate a renovation renovation estimate that spells out the expected material and labor costs for the renovation.
8. MECHANICAL WORK
Q: Do you work on the chassis, axle, bearings, wheels or inspect the Airstream?
A: The first stop for your Airstream is to have it checked out by a licensed RV mechanic that we recommend. They will conduct a full inspection and provide a quote for all recommended work on items such as axle(s), brakes, suspension, bearings, running lights, chassis, and hitch system. The important point is to secure a solid foundation for our clients to start the renovation process, which results in a safe reliable Airstream experience.
9. SHIPPING
Q: I live on the other side of the US. Is it really economical to do the build that far away?
A: Sure. We do builds for clients around the world. Shipping Airstreams is not a big expense. Chances are you’ll buy an Airstream from somewhere on the West Coast, because the steel chassis tends to hold up better in the West’s drier weather then the humid East.
10. TIMELINE
Q: How long does a renovate take?
A: Designs are typically done in 2-4 weeks. Renovations take between 2-4 months. Depending on the specifics of the build, some projects may take longer, some less.
11. TRY-BEFORE-YOU-BUY
Q: Do you have finished Airstreams ready-to-buy?
A: Yes. We have several completed Airstreams available. We also have several projects in the pipeline that will be finished by the Summer of 2014. If you’d like to try-before-you-buy, you may want to spend a night or more in one of our five renovated Airstreams located at the Santa Barbara Auto Camp, 2712 de la Vina St, Santa Barbara, CA 93105.
