On the road again
Just can’t wait to get on the road again
The life I love is making music with my friends
And I can’t wait to get on the road again
On the road again
Goin’ places that I’ve never been
Seein’ things that I may never see again
And I can’t wait to get on the road again
-Written and sung by Willie Nelson
This is our third road trip blog about the adventures we encountered during the week we purchased our first Airstream motorhome and Bambi drag-along. The motorhome is a 1984 310 31-foot beauty from Oklahoma and the Bambi is a 1963 (16′er) in excellent condition.
The trip started when we flew from Santa Barbara, CA to Oklahoma City, OK where the 310 had been sitting unused for the past several years. It was enjoyed for decades by a couple of snowbird’s who called her “Bullet” and was their home on the road for winter getaways to California. Sadly, her longtime caregiver, Earl, passed away three months ago and his widow, Mary, and his family decided it was time to part with this part of their past.
The adventure started as we drove north to Kansas, then turned east at Salina, KS to Denver, CO where we picked up the little Bambi. The owners were a couple of cool guys, Marco and Jose, who had intended to turn it into a hot dog stand, but changed their minds after they got into the project.
It has been a fantastic road trip… more aptly an adventure. Nothing’s stopped us yet… not baseball-sized hail storms, 20 degree nights fiddling with a fickle furnace, dodging funnel clouds and tornadoes, or 5 am truck stop maintenance. The magnificent scenery and friendly comments and stares from onlookers continues to make us smile.
Airstreams truly are one of America’s most endearing links to her past. It seems as though everyone has a story to share… and we enjoying listening to them.
This blog entry is the first of a series of reports from the road. Hopefully, our mechanical issues have been fairly-well ironed out thanks to Statkus Engines, a family-owned and operated mechanic in Albuquerque, NM.
Whoops… this just in. Wendy Statkus just called to let us know that during a test drive it appears we may have more serious issues with the motorhome’s drive system ;-( possibly something with the drive shaft or wheel bearings?!?!
Stay tuned… after all, LIFE IS an adventure.

Hey Guys, So great to meet up with you this afternoon. I see lots of good times in the future, and hopefully an awesome collaboration.
We’ll keep in touch Josh. Let the good times roll!
What an adventure! Very cool stuff - I’m so jealous. These mech issues might be the airstream gods saying ‘stick to the trailers.’ Old motor vehicles are always a crapshoot.
