One of the easiest ways to share your dream is to go to HofArc’s Wish List. This is a fun and intuitive way to customize your dream.

Vessel Acquisition
HofArc clients don’t need to have a vessel to start designing a project. Most of our clients don’t have a vessel when they contact us. So, naturally the first part of our design process is often to help clients determine what they should buy.
When it’s time to find the right vessel to purchase — new or pre-owned — we can refer you to one of our Pickers and Hunters. They literally see hundreds of vessels all over the country. They know the market and the product so they’ll help you make a smart buy.
Pickers and Hunters typically charge their clients a reasonable Finder’s Fee for their services. These fees are paid directly to the service providers and not HofArc. We just refer you to them, and you work with them to find the vessel.
Once you’ve made a successful purchase we will recommend a dependable, bonded and insured shipper who will deliver your vessel from anywhere in the country either to our facilities in Santa Barbara, CA or to one of our manufacturers located throughout the country.

Discovery Phase
The first step is to define the concept, priority, cost and timeline of your renovation. This is where our design team develops a plan that addresses your project requirements. The results of this process will produce a schematic design which includes a floor plan, digital materials board, specifications sheet, and project program. The project program includes a scope of work, preliminary estimate, and preliminary schedule range. At this stage clients will know the project cost range, as well as a sense for the look and feel of their project.

Inspection and Demolition
Our experienced professionals will inspect the chassis, hitch, running system, and overall condition. The demolition includes removal of all interior cabinets, beds, fixtures, and appliances in the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and dining areas. All existing systems and hazardous organic matter inside the chassis, cabinets and walls are removed. For vintage trailers we typically recommend replacing the axles, brakes, bearings, leaf springs or torsion suspension, and other hardware. Our welders will replace, rebuild and refinish the chassis and hitch to give them decades more of life.

Construction Documents
Now the fun begins. We’ll set up a design meeting to determine your dreams, your goals, and your requirements. We will ask lots of questions about how you want to use your project. Is it for adventure and recreational off-the-grid use, or will you be plugged into RV park power, water and sewer? Will it be used as a guesthouse, or spare office on your property? Is it a mobile display or service vehicle? We’ll discuss specific options, designs and make recommendations. Soon thereafter, we’ll provide you with a floor plan and list of finishes, systems and appliance upgrades that can be installed. You’ll get your choice of many fabrics, colors and tile options. Our design services result in a full set of construction documents, with floor plans for electrical, plumbing, HVAC and shop drawing. All of these details are necessary to build it properly. We can also provide elevations and 3D renderings to help clients get a better sense of the end product. During the design process we prepare a highly detailed estimate that breaks the job down into a number of different material and labor categories. Your design is custom made for you, benefiting from our years of experience. This is a digital-friendly, interactive process made to fit clients from around the world. We will often refer to past project materials and floor plans to provide clients with real-world examples. During the design phase, we can either engineer the project to meet the budget as required, or base decisions on design with cost considerations being secondary. In the end, the scope of the project, and the related costs, are approved by the client prior to the start of construction work. At this stage, you will know exactly the cost of your project.

Quotation & Cost Engineering
Hofmann Architecture specializes in helping you achieve your project goals regardless of your budget. Our project management services include creating a smart design that meets your requirements for function, space and style. Then we’ll search our network of professionals to find the best fit for the renovation job.
The first step is to contact us with your Wish List, budget and timeline. We’ll help guide your project so that it’s done right.
When planning for project costs, it is helpful to understand the difference between Hard Costs and Soft Costs.
Hard Cost are costs directly associated with building a project, such as Materials and Equipment, Construction Labor, Construction Management, Subcontractors, Consultants and even the cost of the vessel or vehicle itself. Hard Costs make up 80-90% of the project.
Soft Costs are project design and planning costs, such as the “Discovery Phase,” Design, Construction Documents, Estimating, Design Consultants, Project Engineering, Design Management, and other design related fees. Soft Costs typically make up 10-20% of a project.
A preliminary estimate is established at the end of the Discovery Phase. A Fixed Fee Quotation is generated at the completion of the Construction Documents, and represents the real cost of labor and materials required to build the project.

Construction Phase
Our network of craftsmen have more than 100 years of combined experience in metalwork, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and technology installations. Every day we’re learning about the latest technical products and procedures. We send our staff to industry expos and workshops to be sure we’re up-to-date with the manufacturers’ products. We’re committed to design and build with the industry’s best practices available.
During the renovation process we provide clients with detailed reports and updates. We will keep you updated on the renovation’s progress with photos and video.
Typical builds take four to six months. Expedited schedules are available. Renovation costs are determined by the design estimate.

Project Review and Completion
Our full service approach means we’ll be there every step of the project, working in concert with a dedicated team of professionals, ensuring it’s built right.
Through construction observation, we’ll ensure that your project is built true to its design, and exactly what you want. Systems will be tested to confirm that everything works the way it’s supposed to and we’ll make recommendations on any adjustments before the project is scheduled for delivery.

Delivery
Yes, completed projects can be delivered to clients in places like Canada, Hawaii, Central and South America, Europe, Australia and Japan. In the big scheme of things, shipping is not a big expense. For example, to ship to Australia is about $6300. The typical cost to tow trailers domestically is about $1.80/mile. Ask us for a shipper referral.

Newcomers to the RV experience often ask, “Which one is best – a motorhome or trailer?” The two options are fundamentally different in one very big way: the way you get to where you’re going.
When clients call with the dream of owning a custom Airstream we are often asked, “What’s the difference between a custom Hofmann Airstream renovation that costs $60k+ and those on CraigsList for $35k?”
“Renovating a trailer bathroom can be a dirty - but rewarding - job! Long story short, I had a relatively blank, very curved canvas to conceive a brand new bathroom.”
One of the most common questions we get is how to apply those beautiful mosaic tiles in our bathrooms, particularly on the shower walls and benches. This blog briefly explains the materials we use and how we do it.
