Client: A childlike thirst for adventure in the great outdoors will fit the new owner of this 1981 Excella 31’ just right. The semi-private rear bedroom suite combined with a generous mid-vessel full bath and kitchen is an ideal open floor plan for a family who’s ready to experience the great outdoors, even if that simply means escaping into your Airstream guest house in the backyard.

Vessel: 1981 Excella 31’

Location: Noelle, the Airstream, was born and raised in Boise, Idaho by a family who enjoyed her first 30 years camping and fishing the magnificent rivers and lakes of the Big Sky region. Noelle’s renovation was designed by HofArc’s Santa Barbara-based designers, then built by one of HofArc’s pre-authorized builders, Vintage Trailer Masters of Bend, Oregon. This Spring she has been brought to California’s Central Coast where she is currently available for purchase.

Purpose: “My 5-year-old niece, Noelle, is the inspiration behind the design of this beautiful Airstream,” says Architect and HofArc founder Matthew Hofmann. “I love her simple purity of purpose and passion for adventure. Her eyes really light up when she hears she’s about to go explore some new horizon with her family.”

Goal: The goal for this Airstream was to influence HofArc’s spacious and open design, while keeping the all-in acquisition, design and build costs under $80,000. To accomplish this, the project was a select renovation, where selected vintage elements that still have useful value are restored to modern function.

For example, some of the original overhead and lower tambour storage spaces have been kept, and the iconic 4-burner propane stove/oven has been reconditioned and refinished. Unusable elements, such as the old laminate countertops have been replaced with beautiful new carbonized bamboo. The double stainless steel sink has also been refinished with new upgraded faucets and piping.

Design Highlights: All of the electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems have been inspected by a qualified vintage restoration company, and are in proper working condition or have been replaced new. There’s ample storage, sleeping spaces, and dining options for a family of up to four.

The greatest amenity may well be the confidence of knowing that the interior work has been designed and managed by HofArc’s designers, and produced by a vintage RV pro with more than 30 years of recreational vehicle service experience.

Amenities:
Airstream’s signature blue striped ZipDee awnings are on the driver and passenger sides, and pull down shades on all windows for ample privacy and cooling shade.

The hitch has been inspected and reconditioned, electric brakes and road lights are all functioning properly, the exterior skin is in excellent condition, and has been polished to a mirror shine.
