Tucked away in a super secret Southern California coastal canyon, two vintage Airstream owners are feeling very, very content. This Hollywood-connected couple now does their work from not just one, but two “his-and-hers” HofArc Airstreams.
Her’s (chivalry is not dead at HofArc!) is a 1964 Globetrotter 19’ — and it truly has it all. His is a 1967 Caravel 17′. Both of these units are second (and third), only, to the world famous Airstream Bambi in name recognition. But although the Bambi is the most requested model, we prefer the Caravel and Globetrotter. The extra couple of feet in length make all the difference for efficiency and comfort.
If there’s such a thing as a “Mom Cave,” this is it. This 48-year-old Airstream was transformed for a Malibu Mom into her remote office and guesthouse.
When we acquire a vintage Airstream we often have to demo the interior because it’s in such bad shape, but this one was different. We were able to see beyond the dirt, smells and broken hardware. One of our “vintage” crewmembers, Tony, wanted the task of bringing her back to life – and boy did he ever! When he was done we couldn’t tell what was old and what was new. Then our refinisher, Angel, went to work and applied the new owner’s custom colors to perfection.
This Airstream has a completely new plumbing supply and drain system, new lights and electrical appliances, new flooring, new paint, new fabrics, plus the exterior has been completely polished and upgraded.
It has a fully-independent with 12 or 110v, or propane-powered systems, five photovoltaic solar panels, along with fresh and waste water storage tanks. Inside there’s a new toilet, shower/tub faucetry, vessel bathroom vanity sink. Beautiful 1″ glass tiles have been installed on the toilet platform.
The kitchen features a new pull out sink faucet, and soap dispenser. We even renovated the original Tappan gas stove/oven at the request of the owner. There is a brand spanking new 3-way powered (12v/110v/propane) refrigerator.
Of course, there are new light switches and outlets, new chrome interior lighting on the walls, and under-counter low voltage lights, as well. On the windows there are new screens, new glass, and new pull-down window shades.
The flooring is our favorite toast-colored bamboo. We keep coming back to strand bamboo because it’s a very dense, durable and renewable product. It’s not only perfect for heavy-duty use, but it’s earth-friendly and very affordable.
A brand new battery and an automatic hitch jack make for easy hookup and go. Polished aluminum propane cylinders and new exterior lighting complete this Airstream original.
